Dhanurmas is a sacred month in the Hindu calendar. This designation is given to a period of one month from when the sun enters the Dhanur rashi (Sagittarius) until the 14th of January (Makar Sankranti). Great glory is attached to serving food to Brahmins and devotees during this month.
During this auspicious period, devotees wake early before sunrise to perform puja and offer prayers. Special devotional songs (kirtans) are sung in the early morning hours. It is believed that prayers offered during the Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn hours) of Dhanurmas carry special merit.
The month is particularly significant for the worship of Lord Vishnu. Devotees offer Tulsi leaves, lamps, and special food preparations to the Lord. Acts of charity and service to saints and the needy are highly encouraged during this period, as they are said to yield manifold spiritual benefits.
