King Maandhata asked Vashishta Muni, “O Muni, how can one achieve emancipation from life and death?” Muni replied, “O King, the outcomes of following the vrat of Aamalki Ekadashi once helped a hunter achieve happiness. The vrat of Aamalki Ekadashi is the destroyer of sins and donor of all happiness and salvation.”

Aamalki Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Phalguna (Faagan). It is named after the Aamalki (Indian gooseberry / amla) tree, which is considered sacred to Lord Vishnu.

On this day, devotees worship the Aamalki tree as it is believed to be an embodiment of Lord Vishnu. Offering water to the tree, performing circumambulation (pradakshina), and observing a fast are the main observances of this Ekadashi. The Aamalki fruit itself is known for its immense medicinal and spiritual properties.

One who observes this Ekadashi with devotion is said to attain the merit of donating a thousand cows, visiting all holy places, and performing many great yagnas. It is said that even the sight of the Aamalki tree on this day purifies the soul.
