Papmochni Ekadashi arrives in the month of Fagan Vad 11. This Ekadashi is the giver of wealth and the destroyer of many sins. The greatness of keeping vrat on this Ekadashi is depicted in Bhavishya Puran.
In the Lok of Swarag (heavenly realm), there is a beautiful garden in the name of Chaitrarath. Nearly all Devtas go to the garden to enjoy themselves. Among them was a sage named Medhavi who was engrossed in deep meditation. A celestial dancer named Manjughosha was attracted to him and tried to disturb his penance. The sage, distracted from his devotion, spent considerable time with her.
When he finally realised what had happened, he was overcome with grief at his lapse in spiritual discipline. He cursed Manjughosha to become a demon. She begged for forgiveness, and the sage directed her to observe Papmochni Ekadashi to be freed from the curse.
Similarly, Medhavi himself confessed his lapse to his father Chyavan Muni, who also directed him to observe Papmochni Ekadashi to purify himself. Through sincere observance of this Ekadashi, both were freed from their spiritual setbacks. This story illustrates that Papmochni Ekadashi has the power to destroy even sins committed against the codes of spiritual life.
