“Utpati” means create, emerge or appear. Everything has been created by the Supreme Almighty. And there are reasons explained in the scriptures for the various creations of things in this universe. Even God needs a reason for Him to appear on earth, let alone anything else.
Utpati Ekadashi (also known as Abhya Ekadashi) falls on the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of the month of Margashirsha (Magshar). This Ekadashi is unique as it celebrates the very origin and birth of Ekadashi herself.
The story of Ekadashi’s origin is narrated in the Padma Purana. In the age of Satya Yuga, there was a powerful demon named Mur who had conquered all the three worlds. Lord Vishnu fought him for thousands of years but was unable to defeat him. Fatigued, the Lord rested in a cave. While He slept, the demon came to kill Him. At that moment, a radiant goddess emerged from Lord Vishnu’s body — produced from His eleven spiritual senses. She challenged Mur and slew him.
When Lord Vishnu awoke, He was pleased with this divine goddess and asked her what boon she desired. She requested that anyone who observes a fast on this day — the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight — should be freed from all sins and attain liberation. Lord Vishnu granted this boon and named her Ekadashi. This is why Ekadashi is so powerful — she is a direct manifestation of Lord Vishnu Himself, created to protect devotees.
