It is celebrated on Faagan Sud Trij. This day marks the birth of the King of Bharatkhand, Shree Nar Narayan Rushi. On this day, all the Devtas and Tridevs swung Shree Nar Narayan Dev on a swing made up of flowers, hence the name Fuldol Utsav. We carry out the celebration in the same way, by placing Nar Narayan Rushi on a Hindolo made out of flowers.
Shree Nar and Narayan are twin sages, incarnations of Lord Vishnu, who performed severe austerities in the Himalayas for the welfare of humanity. Their ashram at Badrinath (Badarikashram) is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.
In the Swaminarayan faith, Shree Nar Narayan Dev holds special significance as the presiding deity of the Ahmedabad diocese. Lord Swaminarayan himself installed the murti of Shree Nar Narayan Dev at the Kalupur Mandir in Ahmedabad.
On this day, devotees perform special puja, observe fasts, and participate in devotional assemblies. The Fuldol Utsav – the flower swing festival – is a joyous celebration where the Lord’s murti is placed in a beautifully decorated flower swing.
