Vaisakh Sud Chaudash marks the appearance of Lord Nrusinh. Whosoever performs the austerities of this day is liberated of all sins.
Lord Narasimha (Nrusinh) is the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He manifested in the half-man, half-lion form to protect His devotee Prahlad from the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu had a boon that he could not be killed by any human, animal, god, or demon, nor inside or outside a building, neither during day nor night. The Lord circumvented all these conditions by appearing at dusk, on the threshold of the palace, in the form of Narasimha.
Lord Narasimha is the embodiment of divine wrath in the service of protecting devotees. He teaches that God will go to any lengths to protect those who have surrendered to Him with pure devotion.
On this day, devotees observe a fast, perform special puja with particular attention to Narasimha kavach (protection prayer), and listen to the narration of Prahlad’s story. The festival reinforces the power of bhakti (devotion) over all material obstacles.
